A vast majority of Roku users want to know the way of setting up Roku media streaming player for 4K HDR. So, I thought why not discuss this particular thing in this blog post. If you too are looking to setup Roku streaming device for 4K HDR, then kindly pay attention towards this post.

First of all, it is important for you to know what is 4K Ultra HD TV is and how it is different from the full HD TV that we all have in our homes. The TV that we currently use displays pictures at 1920 x 1080p, which is good, but this 4K Ultra HD TV is going to display picture at 3840 x 2160p, which means bigger and better picture.

There are a few 4K Ultra HD TVs and Roku mediastreaming players that support HDR (High Dynamic Range), a feature that brings a wider assortment of colors and brightness. Now, we come to the part where I will tell you about the entire process of setting up Roku with 4K HDR.

There are certain things that you require, so make sure you have those things.

  1. A 4K HDR TV with HDMI 2.0 port available. The port should also support HDCP 2.2. Also, check that the TV should be updated with the latest software. The HDMI 2.0 should be configured in order to enable HDR.
  2. The Roku media streaming player that you have should stream 4K HDR.
  3. Internet should work properly along with an adequate bandwidth so that you don’t find problems in streaming videos in 4K quality.
  4. An application like Netflix should be installed with a plan to support 4K HDR streaming.
  5. If using Roku media streaming player, then you need a premium high-speed HDMI cable, but if using Roku streaming stick, no need to get that cable.

HDMI 2.0 & HDCP 2.2

Make sure that the devices you’ve connected to Roku device support HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. Devices such as your TV, AVR or soundbar and any device that is connected in between. Without the support of HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2, you won’t play content in 4K quality. Don’t know what HDCP 2.2 is, then it is copy & content protection standard that is being used by TV and movie industry. Many 4K HDR TVs support HDCP 2.2 on a single HDMI input.

Audio/Video Connections

If you have checked that all the devices that are connected to the TV support HDMI 2.0, and there are inputs available on the TV, which support HDCP 2.2, then it’s time for you to setup Roku media streaming player.

You can now attach the HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the Roku media streaming player. This step is not applicable when using Roku streaming stick. You can select from below-mentioned options that suit the configuration after Roku media streaming player is ready to connect with the TV.

Connect directly to a compatible 4K TV
  1. In this, connect one end of the HDMI cable to Roku and another to the TV that supports HDCP 2.2.

Connect AVR or Soundbar using HDMI ports

  1. In this, one end will again be connected to the HDMI cable whereas another end connects to the AVR or soundbar that supports HDCP 2.2.
  2. Connect premium high-speed HDMI cable to the soundbar’s or AVR’s output. Another end of this premium high-speed HDMI cable will be connected to HDMI 2.0 input on the TV that supports HDCP 2.2.

The process of setting up Roku for 4K HDR is now complete. Take help of experts if anything remains unclear instead of trying anything on your own.
